Snowball was our very first pet and the first animal born on the farm. We rescued his pregnant momma after she was abandoned during a frigid cold spell a few years ago. He is an agile tree climber, a master hunter, and a napper extraordinaire.
Gracie is our number #2 pet. She is a charcoal lab and our first pup on the farm. We surprised the kids at school and picked them up early to drive down to North Carolina to get her. We had actually picked out another puppy that was supposed to be ours, but when we got there, her sweet personality won us over. Gracie enjoys chasing her ball as long as we will throw it and snuggling as close as physically possible to any human in her sight.
Buddy was our SPCA “foster fail” pup. He was only supposed to be with us for a few weeks until after he was neutered. Instead, Gabe fell in love with this one and decided he would be his dog. He now faithfully guards and protects the animals with his partner-in-crime, Gracie. Buddy is a big baby. He loves belly rubs and trying to interfere with Gracie getting her ball after it’s been thrown.
Harper is our “miniature” Juliana pig and was pet #3. Katherine saw a pen full of baby pigs at a Poultry Swap, and after baby Harper was put in her arms, she immediately fell head-over-heels in love. Harper could fit in one hand; she was so tiny and went with Katherine everywhere, even to work every day. She now weighs closer to 150 pounds and is equal parts sweet and sassy......well, a little more sassy than sweet, if we’re being honest.
Hazel was our first goat. That didn’t last long, though, because we picked up Lucy a couple of hours later. Hazel was nine weeks old when we got her. We didn’t tell the kids where we were going, so they were very pleasantly surprised when a baby goat was brought out to the truck. Hazel road home on Katherine’s lap and quickly melted everyone’s hearts. However, she would not let us anywhere close to her. If you came within 5 feet, she would take off. Katherine dedicated hours each day to sitting out with the goats and giving them attention. Now, you could never tell that Hazel was once such a skittish goat. She has become a lap goat!
Lucy was picked up shortly after Hazel. Lucy was originally sold to someone else, but because she has somewhat of a 3rd teet, that sale fell through. It worked out perfectly for us because we didn’t care about that. We just wanted a sweet goat to love. She, too, seemed rather skittish and didn’t want anyone to come close to her at first. However, she very quickly warmed up and is now one of the sweetest goats on the farm. She’s also the alpha goat.
Goldie was born on the same farm as Lucy. They played together when they were kids. She stood out to Gabe from day one, but we went with Lucy instead. About a week after we brought Lucy home, we decided we needed to go back for Goldie. Goldie has always been sweet and gentle. You’ll often find her snuggled up next to Hazel on top of their spool.
During a search for one more sweet goat, Gabe came across another farm for us to visit. We were JUST supposed to be visiting in order to get an idea of what her goats were like. We were planning to get a wether in the spring. Little Lilly won Gabe over during the visit, though, and he decided that she needed to come home with us. Lilly is sweet, calm and very chatty!
Pepper grew up with Lilly. After deciding to bring Lilly home, the breeder offered us a deal if we would take one more. It’s always nice if you can bring two goats from the same farm, because it lowers their stress levels going to a new home. Pepper is a beautiful little doe who is playful and fun.
Molly is our miniature Zebu. Just like most animals when they go to a new farm, she was also pretty skittish around us at first. It took lots of love and some bottle feeding to break her out of it. She’s still a little nervous around new people, but we have no doubt that in time she will come out of her shell. She and Ferdinand are great buddies and love to follow each other around. She’s also Katherine’s best little buddy. You’ll usually find them cuddling somewhere on the farm. It’s amazing how great snuggling a cow can make you feel!
Ferdinand is our rescue off a local beef farm. He was born with a lame leg, his mother passed away some time later, and he was destined to become dog food. We got Ferdinand in winter 2022, and he has come such a long way! When we first got him, you couldn't get within 20 feet of him without him running away in fear. With time, he's grown to trust people, so you can love on him without him being fearful. We have loved watching this handsome boy grow and feel more secure and trusting. It's been such a beautiful thing to watch!
Charlie and Ellie are our pair of KuneKune pigs. They were born in April 2022, and have grown so much! They are both super sweet and love grazing in the yard, knocking over water buckets to make mud and belly rubs.
